For all you girls who oh so often go home crying about how the rich beautiful bad people are responsible for the fact that you aren't rich enough to have a better car, read this.

Nobody is saying it's going to be easy, we're just saying, well, where's your dick and balls?

(Sarcasm aside, this really is an excellent article that we can probably all agree on, even though it was written specifically for women.)

Now, I don't know yet, but who wants to take bets on whether or not this is yet another example of why affirmative action is so bad?

Came across this in my daily ramblings across the internet. Thought it was interesting.

An interesting question, and one that has a very plain, unambiguous answer. I haven't read this whole site, but I kind of liked this intro page.

As portrayed in the movie "The Gangs of New York", the Five Points neighborhood in NYC was a slum, brimming over with violence, crime and poverty. This short essay, followed by some excerpts from newpapers of the era, gives an idea of what it must have been like.

"Around the doors of many cellars you may see, at any time when the weather is not too cold, swarms of children whose appearance is the best argument that can be found in favor of public wash houses; covered in rags, encased in a coat of dirt, that from long hardening has become a sort of water and fire proof paint, their hair matted into one mass with grease and dust, their limbs distorted by disease or bruised and disfigured by accident, constantly in contact with the more vicious of the street-roaming vagabonds of larger growth, utterly ignorant of such a place as a school, perfectly oblivious of the use of the alphabet, they grow up in ignorant wickedness to a future of vice and misery. "The Confederate States of America, through the eyes of a faux documentary, takes a look at an America where the South won the Civil War. Supposedly produced by a British broadcasting company, the feature film is presented as a production being shown, controversially, for the first time on television in the Confederate States."

Just saw this flick. Loved it - it's simultaneously the most entertaining, original and thought-provoking thing I've seen in a movie theater in ages. If you are either a fan of Alternate History or interested in Sociology and Anthropology, you should find this film to be fascinating. Besides that, parts of it are just downright funny.

This is pretty cool, but some people just seem to have way too much time on their hands.

Here are some galleries of art, including works by the always trippy H.R. Giger, from the famous Heavy Metal Magazine - possibly one of the originators of the 'graphic novel' genre. I didn't realize this blast from the past was still around.
