I do not know what I may appear to the world; but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.

Sci Fi publisher and opponent of copy protection and DRM Jim Baen, dead at age 62. Another one of the few people I actually admired.

Also known as the Acorn, this early microcomputer was widespread in the UK, but didn't make much of an impact in the US. Sounds like a pretty neat little machine.

This game, apparently part RTS and parts FPS, has an interesting history and looks like it might be fun to play. I wonder how difficult it is to get in a game?

This is an interesting experiment. The study shows how scary cell phone radiation could be.

Whatever your stance on software piracy, this article from Wired about how the Internet pirate distribution channels work is pretty interesting, if you're at all into computers or the internet.

It says "In 24 hours, SMF's single [700Mb] version of The Hulk had metastasized into at least 50,000 copies." That seems a bit much to me - that's a helluva lot of bandwidth in such a short period of time - and that's before it even hit the P2P networks.

Andrew Oglesby, age 6, is the newest CNN reporter.

Apparently, he's doing a gig reviewing children's books.

I think it's an excellent idea. Why NOT have kids news, written and presented (but, uh, not necessarily produced or edited) by kids?

Long ago when the U.S. went into Afghanistan, it was go get rid of the Taliban and I was happy for that. Then the program changed to one of democracizing the country... Here, I said at that time it would never happen and I still contend even more so that that country will ALWAYS be a wild, rogue country with its top priority being the Opium and other narcotics trade. The war lords there (actually Provincial leaders) are in charge of the drug trade ands they have their own separate armies. A Government in Kabul WILL NEVER have control of the country as long as the provincial war lords are allowed to exist. My solution long ago was for the Government of Kabul to have a huge meeting at the Capitol (Kabul) and ALL of the provincial war lords would be present.. then nuke the place. That would then give a legitimate government of Afghanistan to POSSIBLY start off. I was in Kabul years ago and no one can imagine the harshness of the terrain.. a terrain that can never be conquered by a central government in Kabul

Also tells you if you're over the legal limit.

You can always dial out, but it's possible to set up the phone to not allow you to call certain people after certain hours with a certain BAC.

Now I need one for email and texting.

... And talking!

THIS POST HAS BEEN MODIFIED DUE TO MISSING USER NAME. TURN ON YOUR COOKIES OR SOMETHING. Remember this one? It makes me want to break out an old 486 box and load DOS, just to play with it.

Has anyone noticed the mistake that the United States Treasury made on the new $10.00 bill?
The bill was printed in 2006, but if you look at the bill it states it was printed in 2004.
Wonder if a bill that is kept in good condition for 20 years will be worth anything?

THIS POST HAS BEEN MODIFIED DUE TO MISSING USER NAME. TURN ON YOUR COOKIES OR SOMETHING. Badly mistaken on points of legal scholarship, no less. I suppose it's not enough to just be a fascist - that would be too one-dimensional - so throw some dissembling in there, too. The professor of criminology who was cited in the majority opinion in the Hudson case (the one concerning "no knock") is "horrified" because "Scalia turned my research completely on its head. My point was that these reforms came about because the courts, specifically the Warren Court, forced the police to institute better procedures with judicial oversight. Scalia now wants to take that oversight away."

Why am I not surprised?

Proving that police will always use tools and information for purposes it was never intended for, NH police use EZ Pass toll booth data to track "suspicious activity".

Of course. Proving once again RL's "Shit Slinging Monkey" theory.

... and so it begins.

Or, should I say, "and so it continues into its 60th year?"

I encourage anyone who cares about America and her freedoms to find out which of your representatives voted FOR this ridiculous and childish amendment, and vote them out of office this November.
